Well Bend Outdoors friends, it is Thursday – and that means it is time for our first installment to the Trail Thursday section of Field Notes! I hinted at the location of our first destination on our Instagram feed yesterday:
Close, Quick, Un-Crowded
Wake Butte is a quick drive West of Sunriver, and offers an even quicker hike up to some interesting tuf rock outcroppings with big views to the South and East. The pleasant stroll up 400 vertical feet takes the hiker through scenic ponderosa pine forest, past boulders one would expect to see at Smith Rock.
Due to the shortness of the hike, and the abundance of other hiking destinations further down the Cascade Lakes Highway, you are almost always certain to find a bit of solitude here. So if you are keen for a quick hike and some views – you should definitely check it out.
Wake Butte Details
The map below will get you to the trailhead which is located off NF Road 40 – the road that connects NF 45 ( The road from Sunriver to Mt. Bachelor ) to the Cascade Lakes Highway.
Take care when driving this road as it is notorious for having potholes and rough shoulders that can take out a wheel quite easily… and the road is often frequented by bikers, so drive safely, and share the road!
Don’t forget we are raising money in the month of August for the Coalition for the Deschutes. $4 from each purchase of our sticker pack is being donated to help restore and protect the Upper Deschutes River <3
