Upper Deschutes

The stretch of the Deschutes River that starts at the spillway of Wickiup Reservoir, and flows in to Bend, Oregon is considered the Upper Deschutes River. While a portion of river from the headwaters at Little Lava Lake to Crane Prairie Reservoir is also the “Upper River”, the section below Wickiup, and the management of it as a means to transport irrigation water is one of the most complex problems facing the Bend Outdoors. Balancing the needs of a growing community, agriculture, and wildlife in the midst of continued drought conditions is a massive challenge, and one that all residents and lovers of the Bend Outdoors should be aware of. This page will serve as a collection of resources and links to information about the topic.
